Charli xcx circling role in Dakota Johnson's debut feature length film A Tree Is Blue
Charli xcx is in talks to join A Tree Is Blue, the upcoming feature debut from Dakota Johnson.
The film, which begins shooting next month in Los Angeles, is penned by Vanessa Burghardt, Johnson’s co-star from Cha Cha Real Smooth, who is also expected to lead the cast.
As well as the 33-year-old pop star, who is making a rapid ascent into the world of film, Jessica Alba, 44, is also reported by Deadline to be in negotiations to bag a role.
The story reportedly follows a young woman on the autism spectrum navigating the summer after high school graduation, seeking freedom and connection beyond the protective bubble of her mother’s care.
The film is said to have a modest budget under $10 million and support from California’s tax credit scheme.
Charli's acting credits include Erupcja, Faces of Death, and I Want Your Sex, as well as co-producing the score for A24’s Mother Mary alongside Jack Antonoff.
The report that Charli is circling Dakota's film comes hot off the heels of Kylie Jenner joining the cast of the 360 hitmaker's new film.
The 28-year-old make-up mogul - who is dating Hollywood star Timothée Chalamet - will appear alongside Charli, and the likes of Alexander Skarsgard, Rachel Sennott, Rosanna Arquette, Jamie Demetriou, Isaac Powell, and Shygirl in The Moment.
Charli teased details of her latest project on social media, posting the film title on her Instagram page.
She captioned the image: "based on an original idea by charli xcx.
"The moment. coming 2026. @a24 @aidanzamiri (sic)"
Charli is set to lead the star-studded cast and it's been confirmed that she'll play a rising pop star navigating "the complexities of fame and industry pressure while preparing for her arena tour debut".
The film has been written by Aidan and Bertie Brandes, and will premiere in 2026.
